SEO stands for search engine optimization and its very critical for the visibility of a website or a blog. How does search engines find you and what makes them crawl you regularly? .These are things that drive most of the traffic to your blog and hence SEO becomes pretty important. Most of the content in this post would be for wordpress .
- Own your domain, yes blogger and wordpress make it easy for anyone to get up and started but once you decide to take your own course buying a domain would be a good idea . I understand hosting isn’t cheap these days but one can always catch up to some free hosting .Wordpress is a great option toinstall as blog software, its FREE ,opensource and has a great community around it and you want help ? its out there
- First thing to do would be to have clean URL in other words better permalinks . The default permalink structure in wordpress is the index.php?p=12 which is very bad but works on all servers .clean URL’s require mod_rewrite an apache module otherwise its not possible to have redirect non existent URL’s . most Web server(hosting) do provide this but it would do good to see if its there . Clean URL’s is all about writing redirection conditions in your .htaccess so that if a users inputs a url thats not existent then the server know from .htaccess what page to redirect to . for eg, the page http://www.theyagar.com/about/ doesn’t actually exist .
- Have relevant headings for your post .Headings are often the text that one sees first. How many of us read a post without seeing its heading ? .Hence its necessary to have relevant heading .It also helps to increase your google search karma .
- using links is also a good thing to do . Linking to blogs with similar content, say for example your are inspired towrite about a topic because your friend talked about it in his/her blog and you link that entry ,google things this is not really a link spam its true and original content . It increases your page rank i guess .
- Using social networking ,you can make your blog visible to outside world by submitting content to popular community content systems like sphere ,digg, delicious and one plugin that i really loved about this was the wp_notable and sphere submission plugin and the best of all is the technorati plugin i have seen it drive so much of traffic in to this blog in a short time and also a nice ajax one called gregarious .
- Submit to other crawlers to aggregate your information .In your Dashboard->Options->Writing Options->Update services . You can give may submissions to ensure that everytime you make a post wordpress automatically pings all the servers below .i put down my list below
