google opening up people search with orkut
Posted on 29th December 2007 by TaggyI logged in to orkut to find a new feature that i havent noticed before, the orkut people search .Facebook had opened up the people search sometime ago but google opening this didnt get much attention though .
And more strangely the default choice is yes ,ie people can search for your name at google and it will show up your orkut profile . strange isnt it ?

while the default option in facebook was a no .I would have expected orkut people to throw up a mail or a notice on the orkut homepage before doing this .Invasion of privacy or rather misuse of it ?
you can see the this in the settings page .

It isn’t exactly an invasion or misuse of privacy. They must state in their terms of service. Orkut is a social networking website, so you expect people to be searching for you. All you have to do to hide yourself from searches with one click (or two if you count the submit button click)… Not too much like hard work, really.

Hi Taggy,
Came to know your blog through Prashanth Mohan :) Anyways, what I see is “show my orkut information when my orkut friends search for me on Google.com”, I don’t see any harm in this. Though it should not be enabled by default. Its search-able only If you are logged in with your google account when you do search. So, by default it doesn’t expose to others, who are not in your friends list. This is just my point of view.
Thanks
